DoorDash, the American company that bought Deliveroo, has agreed to buy the grocery delivery firm Instacart for $17bn.

Instacart specialises in grocery and convenience store delivery in the US and Canada. DoorDash, which began as a restaurant delivery business, operates in more than 40 countries and has been adding more shopping to its service. It completed its takeover of its UK rival Deliveroo in October 2025.

DoorDash said the Instacart brand and app will stay. Grocers will be able to choose to work with either, and the companies say Instacart customers could shop at more than 50,000 additional stores, on top of the nearly 100,000 on its platform today.

Explaining the deal, DoorDash's co-founder and chief executive Tony Xu pointed to the difficulty of doing grocery shopping online on someone else's behalf, from choosing ripe fruit to finding a substitute the customer would have picked. He said Instacart had the grocery knowledge and DoorDash had the delivery network.

What happens next

DoorDash will pay $65 a share, at least 75% of it in cash. The two businesses will run independently until the deal completes, which is expected at the end of 2027 or in the first half of 2028, subject to approval by Instacart stockholders and regulatory clearance.
