Greene King, the pub company and brewer with about 38,000 staff, will be run by a woman for the first time in its 227-year history.

Clair Preston-Beer, currently the group's chief digital and commercial officer, will succeed Nick Mackenzie as chief executive. He stands down at the end of February 2027 and she formally takes over in March. Mackenzie will stay on the board for a time to help with the handover.

Preston-Beer joined Greene King from Whitbread in 2020 as managing director of its pubs business. She said the group had prioritised investment in data and AI.

Mackenzie joined as chief executive in 2019, the year the group was bought by its current owner, CK Asset Holdings.
